Collector's Note
The Cartier Tank Basculante reference 2386 is a refined ladies version of one of Cartier's most inventive Tank designs. Its rectilinear case keeps the familiar Tank profile, while the swiveling construction was designed to protect the dial. Produced in the late 1990s and early 2000s, most examples are associated with around 2000, a period when Cartier was revisiting several of its historic shaped watches. The stainless steel case measures 22 by 32 mm, a compact size that wears with the elegance of a classic Tank but gives the Basculante a more architectural feel. The silver dial has Cartier's signature Roman numerals and blued steel hands, a combination that keeps the watch formal without making it hard to wear day to day. Inside is the Cartier quartz caliber 059, a practical and reliable movement that helps keep the case slim. What sets the Basculante apart is its reversible case. That feature gives reference 2386 a different appeal from a standard Tank and shows Cartier's ability to pair decorative restraint with useful design. On an alligator strap, the watch has a more traditional presentation that suits its crisp Art Deco lines. Reference 2386 is not generally considered a country-specific or boutique limited edition. Its appeal comes instead from the strength of the design and the relative rarity of the Basculante within the broader Tank family. For collectors drawn to shaped Cartier watches, the Tank Basculante remains an understated and recognizable reference. Like New with Cartier box and papers dated 1999.
